Hi, my name is Jackie Carter. I am a speech-language pathologist and dyslexia testing specialist and practitioner who is absolutely passionate about the work I do with children.
Having worked first as a substitute classroom teacher for years (as my older four children were in elementary school), I then began practicing as a speech-language pathologist. I worked for two years in a private school for children with learning disabilities and then in the public schools for six more years. Through these experiences, I have witnessed diversity in learning styles. As I work with each of my students, his/her needs become a puzzle to be solved, a challenge I love as I come to know the unique ways in which each learns best. Therefore, each therapy session is tailored to meet the child’s individual needs.
Being both the mother of a child with special needs and a special educator, I have come to know special education law and the IEP process very well. Skilled at writing IEP’s I also serve as a consultant at IEP meetings.
Providing educational opportunities for parent groups is something I really enjoy doing. I’ve been certified through the Hanen Centre in Canada to teach “It Takes Two to Talk.” Through this Hanen Program for parents I teach moms and dads to help their children birth to six years become better communicators. I also give informational presentations on other topics related to special needs, communication, and reading.
